Italy: Paolo Gentiloni appointed new PM

Italian President Sergio Mattarello decided to appoint Paolo Gentiloni as prime minister. Being a member of the Democratic Party and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paolo Gentiloni accepted this appointment.

Who is going to take the place of Foreign Minister as well as the exact composition controlled by Gentiloni is not yet known.  Presumably, it will be approved before the EU meeting, which is scheduled on December 15th.

Paolo Gentiloni is well-known to be a cautious politician. On the one hand, he has opposed the anti-Russian sanctions, talking about their economic disadvantage. On the other, Gentiloni stressed that “Italy will accept any decision of the United States”, but later he was for the extension of these sanctions. Moreover, being a young man, Paolo Gentiloni had some radical left views, while remaining a Catholic, like his famous ancestor - Count Vincenzo Ottorino Gentiloni. Vincenzo Gentiloni concluded the pact of the possible participation for practicing Catholics in the political life of the country contrary to the prohibition of the Pope.
