The EU doesn’t like Russian-Turkish rapprochement

02.08.2016

The European Union is concerned over the prospects of a resumption of the “Turkish Stream” pipeline construction. Reuters has reported this, citing a senior official in Brussels.

Why Brussels is against Turkish Stream

The reason for such concern is the potential increased dependence of the EU on Russia and Gazprom in the energy sphere. In addition, if Turkish Stream is successful, then the EU would not be able to pressure Russia via Ukraine. If Turkish Stream is opened, then Ukraine’s importance as a transit country falls drastically.

Forecast

The restoration of Russian-Turkish relations is not beneficial for Washington and Brussels. These two geopolitical actors will make every effort to pit the two states against each other once again.
