Victoria Nuland says USA is ready to Help Moldova with Reforms

Friday, 6 May, 2016 - 11:00

The US government promised to support the new Moldovan Parliament, including by sending American experts to Moldova who will help "the government in the implementation of the planned reforms." This was stated by the assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs and Eurasia Victoria Nuland during a meeting with the first Vice-Chairman of the Moldovan democratic party Vladimir Plahotniuc.

According to Nuland, the United States appreciates the commitment of the Moldovan government to the idea of reforming the country. "We support the continuation of your work at this pace," said Nuland, who also pledged that Washington will soon send their experts on key trends to Moldova, and asked that the government of Moldova will continue to act consistently on the path of reforms."

It must be pointed out that the meeting was held in the US State Department building, and in addition to Nuland, the Deputy assistant Secretary of State Bridget Brink, who recently visited Moldova, was also present.

Plahotniuc went to the US not just in the composition of a delegation, but as "the Executive coordinator of the ruling coalition  in Moldova." Meanwhile, no one in the Parliament knows about the existence of such a position. The US Embassy in Moldova did not explain anything, and just said that "Plahotniuc is a member of the official delegation of Moldova, which is headed by Deputy Prime Minister-Minister of economy Octavian Calmac".

Prior to this, Nuland spoke against early parliamentary elections in Moldova because, in her opinion, "Pro-Russian forces can come to power in Moldova" as a result of such elections.

Meanwhile in Moldova:

On May 3rd, a column of military equipment and troops crossed the Romanian-Moldovan border to carry out the "Dragon Pioneer 2016 "military exercise, which will be attended by about 200 American military personnel.

These exercises should be understood as another US provocation against Russia. Previously, naval maneuvers were held at the Georgian coast, where NATO troops were involved. Moldova, like Georgia, has a claim to the breakaway territories. Transnistria (TMR) hosts a military base belonging to the Russian Federation. However, it is actually landlocked, as near Ukraine there is no way to enter the territory of TMR.

Moldova is officially a neutral country, so the demonstration of military maneuvers has caused confusion among many citizens of this state. In addition, the organizers of the exercises earlier reported that on May 9th an exhibition of NATO equipment in the central square of Chisinau will take place.

Octavian Racu states more on this issue:

The visit of Vladimir Plahotniuc (the infamous Moldavian oligarch and mafia boss - Katehon) to the US and the fuss over the use of military equipment for the May 9 parade in the center of Chisinau, which is meant to irritate the Russian side, do not appear to be coincidences.

Victoria Nuland’s appearance alongside the controversial oligarch serves as a message from the world’s hegemon: Plahotniuc is and will be your master. It doesn’t matter what I think or what Moldovan citizens want as long as the White House is more concerned with its military games in Eastern Europe. But what does Plahotniuc want? We can assume that this figure of Moldovan politics is to become no more nor less than the president of Moldova. We must not hide behind finger-pointing and we should not be naive: the validity of any election depends on Washington’s recognition, even if the election is a big hoax.
