The Moldovan Crisis As the Effect of Ideological Emptiness
However, the biggest problem in this major conflict consists of at least two (more or less) hidden but fundamental aspects. The group of protestors is contesting the ruling alliance for its failure to promote “in the right way” the so-called European integration process. So, in the view of those who accept the DA Platform, in order to solve all the problems that exist in Moldovan society, it would be enough to organize the elections and to replace the “bad guys” with “good guys” and to continue to move full-speed-ahead towards the European Union. The European Dream is viewed as a real and functional national objective. So, the representatives of this wave of protests share the same geopolitical blindness and common lack of understanding of what the EU is and how it works. Nobody from this team and its followers (who are well-known tools and disciples of George Soros) could understand that the EU, as a continental institution, is going to fall in much the same manner as the Soviet Union. And there are many reasons that will determine this coming disintegration. The EU was, from the very beginning, an artificial structure that violates the national sovereignty, economic interests, traditions, and religious and cultural identity of each and every one of its European member states.
In general, the Moldovan political, academic and media establishment remains fascinated by: Eurocentric myths; the American way of life; and the broader concept of the “West,” which is viewed as the epitome of the “perfect society.” A critical approach to Westernization, European integration, globalization, neoliberal ideology, etc., has not penetrated Moldova’s mainstream media networks and, nor has such a critical approach penetrated the minds of the Moldovan elite.
The second big problem is the following: the partisans of the alternative civic group “Platfroma DA” do not possess any kind of religious or spiritual belief. As full-fledged members of a post-Soviet society, they have easily transitioned from their former Communist atheism to a newly acquired Liberal atheism. By abandoning the “old” Communist paradigm they smoothly fell under the trap of the “new” Liberal way of thinking. And this scarcity of vision represents a fundamental conceptual bankruptcy – not only for this group, but for the largest part of our society. Therefore, if this “fascinating” model (imposed by Western centers of power and influence) is not overcome, nothing will change for the better in Moldova – even if the leaders of “Platforma DA” attain power.
In the Moldovan capital-city of Chisinau we have two large, parallel street demonstrations. The second one is organized by two parties that are positioned somewhat closer to the left side of the political spectrum: “Our Party” which is led by Renato Usatiy, and the Socialist Party led by Igor Dodon. Both parties are considered to be closer to a pro-Russian orientation. While the Socialists have adopted the role of a political substitute for the old hard-line Communist party (which lost its traditional electoral support via its pro-Russian rhetoric), the leader of “Our Party” is formulating a more balanced position. He has a totally comprehensive and critical attitude concerning the pro-European orientation for Moldova. However he is manifesting and accentuating a definitive lack of vision concerning the strategic development of Moldova. This regrettable ideological emptiness could be the fruit of a lack of experience because both leaders of these parties are representing the younger generation of politicians. Their affiliation with the political left prevents them from having a deeper understanding of the essence of neoliberalism as a political, economic and social model of development. Especially in this current period of time which is characterized by a consensual criticism on both the left and the right wings of political movements in Europe, the USA and elsewhere – e.g. criticism of corporatocracy, financial capitalism, free-trade ideology and consumer society. Their real chance to win in the next electoral campaign and thus to rule Moldova will not be as successful for our people as it could be by having a profound and responsible understanding of huge threats which are a menace to our country, our continent and our planet.
