Nazarbayev hands over some powers to Parliament

The President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev said that he would remove a part of his authority and hand it over to the Parliament and the Government.

President Nazarbayev said: «The goal now is to gradually pass more power from the President to the Government, Parliament. We will do so. The President should not be over-trusted, this needs to be learned».

However, his desire to transfer some powers is not the so-called democratization promoted by pro-Western liberals. On the contrary, 76-year-old president does not have a sufficiently strong successor. And the fact that Nazarbayev has really thought about this issue confirms his recent statements. He would not appoint his children to high positions in order to pass the presidency to them.
