Now even Europe will actively oppose American interference in its cooperation with Russia.

Vladimir Olenchenko, chief researcher at the Center for European Studies at IMEMO RAS, commented on the situation around the construction of Nord Stream 2 and the threat of new US sanctions against the Russian Federation in an interview with Economics Today.

According to the expert, Berlin and the entire European Union as a whole will soon be more actively opposing US intervention in the Russian gas pipeline project.

He noted that the key character in the EU is German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who sees in cooperation with the Russian Federation serious benefits for the economy of her country. Against the backdrop of the crisis in connection with the coronavirus, this sounds even more relevant for Europe.

Dissatisfaction in the EU from gross American policy and economic uncertainty should be the tool that will allow to complete the project, ”Olenchenko said.

In his view, Washington may limit itself to sanctions on the Samara Thermal Energy Property Fund, which now owns the Akademik Chersky pipeline laying vessel.

The United States will not dare to do more, since even economic restrictions against Gazprom will become an unnecessary foreign policy risk for them, the expert said.
