China passes Hong Kong’s controversial law on state security

Tuesday, 30 June, 2020 - 15:40

The law criminalizes activities aimed at secession of Hong Kong, undermining Beijing’s authority over the territory and cooperation with undesirable foreign organizations.  This gives mainland authorities ample opportunity to restrict public speaking and freedom of speech in autonomy.

Protest demonstrations are already planned in the city on Wednesday July 1, despite the danger that participants will be arrested under the new law.
