The speaker of the European Commission, Mina Andreeva, said that the EU will not accept Turkey's new proposal, and instead will wait until Ankara fulfills all the requirements of Brussels. Among the requirements listed are measures that the Turkish authorities to make in order to fight terrorism, as well as transparency revolving around the current investigation into the failed coup attempt.

Also, Turkey has to carry out a contractual obligation regarding the protection of personal data, to be in-line with EU standards, take measures to prevent corruption and to sign an agreement with the EU’s police agency - Europol.

This can weaken the sovereignty of Turkey and make it dependent on the actions of the Brussels bureaucrats.

Turkish response

Turkish Foreign Minister Melvut Cavusoglu already responded that if the EU does not cancel the visa requirements, Turkey will stop the agreement with the EU on migrants, in which it has pledged to monitor the migration flows to Greece, Bulgaria and Romania - the main transit country for illegal migrants from the Middle East region. After the conclusion of this agreement, 468 migrants had already been returned from Greece to Turkey.

What to expect

This political conflict can be resolved on August 9th, when the President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan will arrive in Moscow. It is clear that Turkey is not satisfied with the didactic tone of Brussels, as well as the hypocritical policy of NATO, which can not help Turkey in dealing with security issues. The solution is a new Turkish strategy aimed at rapprochement with the SCO and EurAsEC.
