The post-WWII geo-political outcome effectively determined the post-war global economic structure. Both are now undergoing huge change. What remains stuck fast however, is the general (Western) weltanschauung that everything must ‘change’ only for it to stay the same. Things financial will continue as before; do not disturb the slumber. The assumption is that the oligarch/donor class will see to it that things remain the same.

At the end of the last century, Latin America faced serious problems caused by the economic policies of neoliberalism, which led to the de facto dictatorship of transnational corporations and the World Bank in a number of countries. The consequences of this were terrible — from mass poisoning due to the privatization of water supply and the collapse of strategic enterprises (with subsequent purchase dirt-cheap by external players) to a sharp jump in unemployment and mass riots.

 

The US, Russia And Iran’s Nuclear Program

Earlier on, the US media reported that Trump’s administration had asked the Russian side to mediate between Washington and Tehran on the issue of negotiations, primarily on the nuclear program, which was resumed during the first term of Trump’s presidency in response to the US withdrawal from the agreement and the tightening of sanctions. Officials in Russia confirmed that such an agreement had been reached, but no further details on the matter have been revealed.

Defence Secretary Hegseth at the Munich Security Conference gave us four ‘noes’: No to Ukraine in NATO; No to a return to pre-2014 borders; No to ‘Article 5’ peacekeeper backstops, and ‘No’ to U.S. troops in Ukraine. And in a final flourish, he added that U.S. troops in Europe are not ‘forever’ – and even placed a question mark over the continuity of NATO.

 

APEC And Chinese-Style Geoeconomics

The 35th summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), which consists of 21 countries from the Nrth and South Americas and Southeast Asia, held in Peru in November 2024, showed that the balance of power is changing rapidly. It is noticeable that the U.S. is losing its influence, although it is trying various methods to retain its hegemony.

For Dialogue Between Civilizations And For A Culture Of Peace

The forum entitled “For Dialogue between Civilizations and for a Culture of Peace” was traditionally held at the main political venue, the Havana International Conference Center (Palacio de Convenciones), from January 28 to 31, 2025. It was attended by delegates from more than 95 countries. There were about a thousand people in total, half of whom were foreigners and the other half – Cubans. This conference is held every two years and is dedicated to the birthday of the national Cuban poet and philosopher, apostle of the Revolution Jose Marti (this year marked the 172nd anniversary).
