North Macedonia needs to resolve a historical dispute with Bulgaria in order to become a member of the European Union. Reported by Deutche Welle.

According to the source, the Bulgarian authorities sent a memorandum to their European partners in August, which explains the position of the republic on some historical issues. They demand that North Macedonia sever relations with its past, namely, with the "ideological legacy of communist Yugoslavia."

The Bulgarian authorities also noted in the memorandum that they imposed their identity on the inhabitants of North Macedonia, who speak the Bulgarian language and can consider themselves to this nation.

Note that North Macedonia was part of Yugoslavia until 1991.
