Italy flees from Brussels to Russia

23.05.2018

Italian President Sergio Matarella agreed to form a government headed by Prime Minister Giuseppe Comte. This will be the first Cabinet in the history of the country, formed exclusively by Eurosceptics. After more than two months of negotiations, the coalition of parties "5 stars" and "League" managed to reach a consensus by proposing to the post of prime minister a compromise figure of a lawyer and teacher from the University of Florence.

After two hours of negotiations in the presidential palace, Comte came out to the press and promised to be "the lawyer of the Italian people".

Brussels in a panic

The appointment of Conte was preceded by negotiations on the distribution of ministerial portfolios. So, the leader of the "League" Matteo Salvini should receive the post of Minister of Internal Affairs. His political power has been supported by the population on anti-immigration rhetoric, so this appointment is largely justified and rational.

Most of all, globalist and neoliberal circles are concerned about the fact that Salvini openly sympathizes with Russia and Vladimir Putin.

Another extremely important position for Italy - the Minister of Finance - should be obtained by 81-year-old Paolo Savona, a convinced eurosceptic and representative of the "old school". He openly declares that he considers Italy's joining the European Union as a mistake. The names of other ministers will be announced later.

Big plans

It is obvious that a government formed by Eurosceptics, which in the Western press is called "populists", will have to justify the expectations of the voters. Ordinary Italians, first of all, are concerned with the issues of illegal migration, security and economic recession. It is quite expected that first, the new government will concentrate on these issues.

Matteo Salvini, in the event of receiving the post of Minister of the Interior, will do everything possible to cut off the flows of illegal migrants that have swept the country in recent years. It is through Italy that the route of the movement of illegal immigrants from Africa to Germany, France and the Scandinavian countries passes. Another important step is the possible exit from the euro area and a requirement to write off the debt to the European Central Bank in the amount of 250 billion euros.

Russian factor

On the external front, the government will concentrate on abolishing anti-Russian sanctions and normalizing relations with Moscow. Italy is among the countries most seriously affected by the countermeasures introduced by Russia in response to Brussels' moves. The patriotic political forces of Europe do not see a threat in Russia, on the contrary, the overwhelming majority is aimed at dialogue and cooperation with Moscow. For such sentiments, many of these politicians are accused of "spying for Russia."

Italy, being the third economy of Europe, becomes the country that can even more loudly declare that the sanctions regime with Russia is contrary to the interests of European countries and their citizens.

It is obvious that the new government of patriotic Eurosceptics will be stuck in the wheels, but the convincing victory of new parties in Italy proves that the "right turn" in Europe has taken place and is gaining momentum.
