Escalation in Donbass: Kiev provocation fails

30.06.2016

On Wednesday, June 29th, the Ministry of Defense of the Donetsk People's Republic announced that Kiev's military had attempted to attack the republican army’s positions in the area of Debaltsevo.

Unsuccessful attack

Servicemen of the 54th mechanized brigade of the Ukrainian army launched an offensive against DPR positions. Ukrainian military forces used weapons prohibited by the Minsk Agreements. For a short time, Kiev's military was able to advance 4 kilometers deep into the territory of the DPR, but they were then defeated and driven back.

Breach of international treaty

DPR authorities have urged the OSCE to pay attention to the actions of the Ukrainian side and recognize their violations of the agreements from "Minsk-2". During the meeting of the Contact Group in Minsk, OSCE representatives received information about the Ukrainian military advancing deep into the territory of the Republic near Debaltsevo and its attack on DPR sappers in Shirokino which occurred on June 27th.

Cold welcome for Poroshenko

All of this took place during Ukrainian President Poroshenko's visit to Brussels. The EU capital welcomed Petro Poroshenko extremely unfriendly. Only a small group of Ukrainian journalists and protocol ceremonial staff of the European Council met him at the time of his arrival at the headquarters in Brussels. Experts have pointed out that in the near future relations between the EU and Ukraine could worsen even more, because the EU is on the verge of disintegration and has no desire or ability to support Kiev.
