Meeting of Patriarch Kyrill of Russia and Pope Francis of Rome
We are living in parlous times. For almost all the countries in the world, the economic crisis is becoming more palpable by the day. And, of course, this is a manifestation of the spiritual crisis which people are now experiencing. The world is in turmoil and anguish. Scripture tells us: ‘And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars… For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in diverse places’ (Matth. 24, 6-7). This is more apposite now than at any other time.
I do not believe that at this particular moment it is a bad thing for meetings to take place between personalities whose stature is universally recognized, as is the case with Patriarch Kyril of Moscow and all Russia and Pope Francis of Rome, who can contribute to the common good and to the pacification of the world.
In any case, the meeting in question is not within the context of an ecclesiastical community, but is rather of a purely social nature. Even the location where the meeting will take place is not related to the Church. Let us pray that God will grant that something good will come of this, for the benefit of all.
