G20 - summit of incidents

The Argentine G-20 summit has already gone down in history because of errors in the protocol. But, perhaps, it will be a breakthrough in terms of bilateral interstate agreements.

Warm welcoming

Argentine Vice-President Gabriela Michetti went out to meet French President Emmanuel Macron, when he had already gone down the ramp and got into the car. Leaving the empty airfield from the plane, the French leader was not taken aback and, not seeing the meeting delegation, approached the airport employee in a yellow vest and shook his hand. In France itself, this gesture of the head of state was immediately endowed with a secret meaning, because large-scale protests of "yellow vests" are now taking place in the country.

The flight of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez was not “noticed” at all, because they were waiting for the Chinese President Xi Jinping with the orchestra on the next landing. But they did not recognize him either - the orchestra began to play when one of the accompanying Chinese delegates appeared.

President Donald Trump almost immediately expressed his dissatisfaction with the simultaneous translation of greetings from Argentine President Mauricio Macri, which he said at his residence.

“I understood better in your language than in my translation,” Trump commented on Macri.

American refusal

The only overlap that occurred with the Russian leader, Vladimir Putin, was the refusal from the meeting with Donald Trump that was heard yesterday.

In Buenos Aires, Putin meets with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and the leadership of Argentina.

Freeing up space

The G20 format itself is perceived by many as far-fetched, because many countries participating in these summits have a rather conditional sovereignty. However, they sometimes try to pursue their policies.

It is clear that 10 years ago no one spoke about the conflict between Turkey and the United States, and now Turkey’s specific drift towards Russia and other players in the political arena begins. Therefore, control of the United States weakens, they lose it in many regions, which means that the degree of sovereignty of others increases. And freedom of action increases.

If countries that are not members of the G8 will not agree among themselves, this will mean a complete loss of sovereignty. Many G20 members simply need to create their own room for maneuver. The same Switzerland skillfully demonstrates neutrality, which can also be taken as an indicator of strength. It is in the dialogue that countries look for ways out of dependence on superpowers.

The decisions of the G-20 are, as it were, not binding, as a statement by the UN Security Council, but a recommendatory one. But still it is a unique platform for exchanging opinions, for coordinating positions, coordinating the actions of the powerful. That is, not only the West, but representatives of the whole world. If you look, the G-20 accounts for 85% of global GDP and two thirds of the total population.

Since all past G-20 summits cannot be called truly productive, even today few expect the G-20 to make special breakthroughs on a planetary scale, but the establishment of bilateral relations between some countries can be quite successful. Therefore, some meetings, of course, will attract particular attention. For example, the negotiations of Emmanuel Macron and Vladimir Putin, at which the leaders intend to touch on security issues
